Emotional support animal · Las Vegas · rests in peace, November 2024

Bella was an emotional support animal who served in Las Vegas — a small dog with an enormous job, which she did the way only animals can: completely, without being asked twice, and without ever needing the story explained to her.

She greeted clients with love and glimmers of joy. She sat beside them on the couch and kept them company — and often, without quite noticing, people would begin to pet her, the body’s own quiet way of soothing itself.

She sat with people on their hardest days. She leaned her weight against legs that were shaking. She stayed.

What she knew without words

Why animals hold us so well.

Nervous systems regulate each other — it’s called co-regulation, and it is one of the oldest facts about being a mammal. A calm, warm body beside yours tells your own body, beneath language, that the moment is safe. Animals are fluent in this. They don’t interrupt, they don’t fix, they don’t need you to be better yet. They simply stay — and the staying is the medicine.

That is what Bella gave, over and over, to the people she served. Presence with a heartbeat. Attachment without conditions. The felt experience of being accompanied.

This page is here to represent the lives she got to hold space for. This space is now held for her.
— with love, always
